Danger High Voltage Creativity! I found Steampunk Nirvana!

steampunk1 steampunk2 steampunk3 steampunk4 steampunk5

Steampunk Nirvana: Honest to god I thought I died and went to Steampunk Nirvana recently. The hubs knew of a place where there was so much stuff and the owner needs to clear it all out so he can finalize the sale of the property. I cannot disclose the location but as soon as I saw it I hardly knew where to look first. There were so many pieces of machinery, outbuildings full of boxes of all things metal-working. I managed to score an entire box of old propellers (it doesn’t get more steampunk than propellers, at least in my opinion). Every type of gear and cog both large and small, plumbing pieces, signs, old sodium light bulbs etc. I took all of my finds home and washed them. All the rusty gears and cogs got a coat of clear so the rust doesn’t come off on my hands. So now I am looking at these pieces and picturing what I can make out of them. I have ideas for clocks and lamps. What would you say to a propeller pendulum clock?……I am saying yes to that idea as well. As I finish these creations I will post them and of course they will be for sale in my Etsy store SyrinxAsylumArts. I am finally getting more traffic through there and even a few sales so that is encouraging. So here are the pictures of my finds, I know it probably sounds extremely geeky to be so excited by this but I had so far had to buy the gears and cogs online so its so cool to find a fairly local source.  I am so inspired.

Stay tuned for what becomes of my “shinies” bwahahahah!

Steampunk Accessories and a new clock with a beach theme

Believe it or not, I have still been creating despite my ridiculous work schedule.  Lately I have focused more on small accessory items like barrettes and other jewelry type things since the clocks aren’t selling.  These are some of the items I have recently listed.  I am trying to balance what I want to create with what sells since I am trying to earn at least a little money at it but that is the lament of all creatives.  The money earned from my store is to go toward the medical coding certificate that I am working on so I can move up in my daytime career. (gotta pay the bills somehow)

Any feedback is appreciated:  All of these items are available for sale on my etsy store, the link is on the right of this page.

thanks as always for reading.

We seem to have taken on a lot of clocks!

I’m not sure if anyone else out there is geeky enough to get that quote but it’s from Futurama, one of my favorite of the grown up cartoons, they go back in time and when they do suddenly the ship is filled with clocks and Leila says this “We seem to have taken on a lot of clocks”.  I have actually taken on a lot of clocks lately.  They are not selling on Etsy but I am taking them on and spiffing them up or in some cases, just cleaning them because they don’t need spiffing like the mid century glass clock I just found last weekend.  It needs nothing, it’s perfect the way it is and so far is not for sale.

I even found what turned out to be a ship’s clock or “chronometer” it doesn’t get more steampunk than that does it?

I went ahead and made 18 pendants and put them up there but so far those aren’t going either.

Oh well.  I enjoyed making them.

So here’s what we’re looking at

Some of these are for sale and some are not.  The antique beauty is still in process, I am turning it into a “painted lady” and may keep it for myself.  but my etsy store can be found here

I wish I understood my fascination with clocks, I think it has something to do with the passage of time and the feeling like I never have enough time etc etc.

Anyway, let me know what you think of my latest stuff.  I am always interested in creative criticism/critique.  I am also making some hair barrettes, a bracelet, a couple rings just experimenting with some other steampunk pieces.  I have a couple more jewelry boxes almost finished too.

Thanks for stopping by!

My Etsy Store is Now Open plus a new fundraiser

I finally opened my Etsy store yesterday, I have been talking about it for a long time and started to wonder if I ever would but I finally did.  I have 10 items right now but there are more in the works including 3 more clocks, 2 completed ones are in the store now.  I am excited to see if I get some good reviews and hopefully even sales by launching in time for Christmas shopping.

This is the link to the store:

Here is the completed Platinum clock as promised:

I’m not completely sure about the clock face, I think it might need some embellishment but it’s in the Etsy store as is for right now.  It’s bigger than it looks at 26 1/2 inches tall.  I am very pleased with the pendulum compartment and the angel inside it though.

I also wanted to share that I have a long-term fundraiser going on for the American Heart Association through a website called bravelets.  I started a page in Debbie’s name and apparently there have been 2 sales so that’s something.  For every piece of jewelry they sell, they donate $10 to the charity of your choice.  This is the link to that page:

As always, thanks for reading and wish me luck on my new venture.

Altered Steampunk Clocks

Well, this is my latest inspiration, making over old clocks, this one is the one that started it all.  I have always loved clocks for some reason, the really good ones are an art form unto themselves.  SO I found this beauty at the local thrift store looking very forlorn but I loved the detail on it and noticed that the case was solid wood, the more I looked at it the more I realized the possibilities.  I didn’t want to take the clock and make it into something else, I wanted to take it, give it a make over, turn it into a piece of art while maintaining its usefulness as a time-keeping piece.  I especially loved that it had a pendulum.  There is just something soothing about the swinging of a pendulum.  I have been very inspired by steam punk so I would call this a steam punk piece, even then angel inside the clock is handmade.  I used silver wire to make a frame and them attached the old gears and hardware to her, I added the white feathers to soften her a little, I thought the juxtaposition between the hardness of the industrial gears and softness of her feathered wings made her more interesting.

I have 3 more clocks in progress, as well as some steam punk style wooden boxes. When those are completed (I have about 6 or 7) I am planning to open an Etsy store.  I am also thinking of some other formats for the angels because I have found I really like to make them so am considering framing them as parts of mixed media pieces.  We shall see how that develops.  I am hoping others will appreciate my creations as much as I love to make them.  Please feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think of my first, finished, steam punk angel clock.

I’m Back and I have New Work to Show You!

Whew! It’s been a long time since I’ve posted. I have to say that my creativity was sapped by all that went on between Christmas and through spring. So, no one was more amazed than I when it suddenly reappeared. I have spent a lot of time listening to Rush’s Clockwork Angel’s album as well as reading the fantasy book that tells the story in much more depth. Anyway, this was only the inspiration for this new art I am making, the other inspiration is my long time interest in steam punk art. I love the idea of making something new out of parts of old things, or creating something different out of something that used to be something else entirely. Kind of like giving new life to something to something that has become obsolete.

I have always had a hard time just throwing something in the trash, not to the point where I think I might be a hoarder but things that could sill be useful somehow just maybe not in their current form.

With this in mind, here is what I have done so far.

This piece started as a gold-colored metal angel that I think was a Christmas decoration. I found it at my favorite thrift store a few years ago. There were several of them and looking back I should have bought them all (but did not want to risk becoming a hoarder haha). Anyway, I have also been collecting old watches and watch pieces. In fact, recently, I went to an antique store in rural SC. I spent hours looking through all the things they had, I could have spent days there. I found a cache of jewelry and watches and carefully picked through them until I had all the broken ones and misc. pieces in their store. I brought them up to the register with my other unusual finds (which also included vintage “start” and “stop” buttons from some type of old machinery) and the older woman at the counter looked at me dumbfounded and said “hmmm, you want These?. Ok well we can call this miscellaneous, how about $4?” SOLD!

This next piece was made from an unfinished wooden box I found in my sister’s things after she died. She loved to do projects so I am sure eventually she would have done something with it. I have had it for 4 years unsure what to do with it when it hit me. First I put the finish on it including lacquer, then I lined it with felt. Then I sat with the industrial looking findings that I had to work with. I love the finshed piece and clock inside is set to a time that has meaning personally to me. This piece is one I am willing to make more of possibly to sell and have already begun on 3 more that I will be listing on here for sale when they are completed.

Well, I am glad to be back and it really feels good to have my creativity flowing again. I have so many ideas in my head I want to quit my job so I can work on them full-time but of course that isn’t going to happen. As always thanks for reading, that is if there is anyone out there still reading since I have been gone so long. I would love any feedback you might have about these new pieces if you could take the time to write something. Thanks again, Carolyn

Psst: I have been out thrifting some more and have found some very cool and very unique pieces and can’t wait to work on them so I will have more to show you very soon so stay tuned! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
